by J Lewis
foamy sea-fingers storm and retreat up and down beaches unknown undulating unrelenting rhythms reach across mountains into my senses whispering i am here i am waiting come to me come
fine-grained red sand swirls in fits and starts against windows and doors slips into shoes cuffs pockets pressing, pleading stay with me stay
i could remain effortlessly but ocean's larger presence pulls me to the watered sand pulls my heart away from this dry heat without goodbye without regret away
j.lewis is an internationally published poet, musician, and nurse practitioner. His poetry and music reflect the complexity of human interactions, sometimes drawing inspiration from his experience in healthcare. When he is not otherwise occupied, he is often on a kayak, exploring and photographing the waterways near his home in California.
I was born/raised in New Mexico, amid the sand and sagebrush, but always loved the ocean. It called me, and I am now in California where I'm much closer to the water.
