The Reliquary

by Harmony Hodges

A well scrubbed crab shell

supine

on a vast spread of sand.

Once an important reliquary

entertaining flotsam, derelict

and various nautical genre,

it

sunk

more

and

more

with every indifferent ocean wave.

The crab shell

apoplectic, disappointed

knew its burial would not be dignified,

not sedimentary dust

drowning gently

upon a tree of algae

next to the Titanic.

Instead,

alone on a beach

the sun vanished

as the shell disappeared

farther and farther

into an unknown land.
